Clawyn

🔈 (CLOW-in)

A small village a few days ride south of Tafolwern, in the gentle northern slopes of the Tyrwinghan Hills, known for its vineyards and wine. There is little here other than a small temple to the Mother. Wine is Clawyn’s principal export. The village relies on nearby Nefyn for grain and some other supplies; it has a potter, smith, cooper, and weaver of its own. Glass wine bottles, salt, and metal for smithing are brought in from elsewhere.

Notable People

  • Rhys, an old man and village elder, likes stories and reminiscing about the past. He is said to have attended Cece I’s coronation

Celyn’s family

  • Hywel Bettws, Celyn’s father, is a stocky, broad-shouldered white vineyard worker with ginger-brown hair. He may have led a work group. Quiet, he cares deeply for his family.
  • Olwen Bettws, Celyn’s mother, is blond, white, and frail. She spins fiber and has never worked in the vineyard or winery.
  • Blodwen Bettws, the eldest sibling, is a fiery redhead and an assistant vintner, ten years older than Celyn. Kiya’s sketch expected her to be married, perhaps with young children, but did not establish her family circumstances.
  • Cynog Bettws, a white man with light-brown or dirty-blond hair about seven years older than Celyn, works in the vineyard and shares his father’s gruff affection. As a teenager, he pursued Ffraid, a daughter of one of the Nefyn blacksmiths; whether the relationship lasted is unknown.
  • Pryce Bettws, five years older than Celyn, is a pale-blond goatherd who speaks very rarely and seldom makes eye contact. He and Celyn were very close. Kiya described him as autistic and floated the possibility that he might develop druidic abilities later; that future remains open.

Celyn was a surprise youngest child. His maternal aunt Dilys, Olwen’s younger sister, works in the vineyards. She is physically sturdier than Olwen but more high-strung. Her husband was tentatively imagined as another vineyard worker. Dilys’s daughter Ilean is about six years older than Celyn. She divides her time among fiber craft, fey diplomacy, and vineyard work when needed, and can be overprotective of her younger brother Ifan. Ifan is about three years older than Celyn, good-natured, strong, and able to do heavy work, though he can be drawn into a fight. He has learning disabilities and spent much of his youth with Celyn’s age group.

Celyn’s agemates

The Crowther twins come from another vineyard-working family. Other young people in the village include Idris, an older bully whose swagger rarely impressed others; Gwawr, a beautiful Black girl who enjoyed the attention she received from boys; Tegan, Gwawr’s beloved and a lover of gossip; Cadwgan, a potter’s son who courted Tegan; Delwyn, a pretty gay young man; Nesta, recently pregnant; and Rhian, probably at the older end of a slightly younger age group.
