Cha’mutte’s Plague
During the Great War, Cha’mutte unleashed a magical plague, apparently fueled by his connection to Limbo, that devastated much of eastern Dunmar and the Upper Istaros. It appeared as a strange red mist that spread across the land, seemingly with a mind of its own, moving unpredictably but inexorably as if following some hidden road. Those who were caught in the mist almost always died, typically to a wasting sickness that began as a cough and quickly progressed to bleeding, pallor, and death. The plague had a devastating impact on the opponents of Cha’mutte: Isingue was effectively destroyed, its armies scattered, and Dunmar thrown into chaos with the destruction of Kharsan, cut off and prevented from providing aid to Sembara during the Ulrich campaign at the close of the Great War.
In the current day, the scars of Cha’mutte’s plague still mark the land. Those who wander in places where many died to its effects report restless spirits, haunted dreams, and visions of choking red mist. Much of eastern Dunmar, especially around Kharsan, remains heavily affected by these plague echoes, and uninhabitable. Further east, the Upper Istaros, especially around Isingue, forms the heart of the Plaguelands, where unpredictable plague echoes are common.
Few dare journey into these plague-cursed lands.
