The Chardon Chalyte Riots
The Chardon Chalyte Riots were a wave of sabotage, arson, street fighting, and general unrest in Chardon after the fall of Fausto and the collapse of the Cleansed hold over the Chardonian chalyte trade.
The riots began after chalyte bureaucrats and trade officials publicly exposed their own corruption and the structure of the chalyte monopoly, triggering massive riots and the rapid formation of a group calling itself the Eightfold Flame. The Eightfold Flame, started by ex-bureaucrats, grew rapidly among chalyte workers and North Bank residents, quickly engulfing much of the North Bank, especially the Chalyte Levels and Ragwater Basin.
Background
Before the riots, the Chardonian chalyte economy was dominated by a small number of oligarchic families: the Auratan Family, Patelios Family, Caloren Family, and Veldari Family controlled between them the entire chalyte supply, from mines to transport to refined product. Through corruption, bribery, and magical control via the Crown of Purity, Fausto and The Cleansed were able to infiltrate and control the Hetaeri Magica, turning it into the near-sole purchaser of refined chalyte, and a vehicle to fuel bribes back to the oligarch families and the Chamber of Stamps.
On May 24th, 1749, the Dunmar Fellowship defeated Fausto in Drankor. Kenzo claimed the Crown of Purity, quickly realized the extent of Fausto’s control, and ordered controlled Chardonian officials tied to the chalyte trade to dismantle the old system, expose corruption, and focus on reparations and social restructuring. Riswynn, who later held the Crown, maintained the pressure on the same officials, though with a stronger and largely subconscious religious undertone.
The result was not a managed reform process. Officials and factors who had been manipulated by Fausto, then by Kenzo, then by Riswynn, began exposing corruption via public pronouncements from the streets and squares of the city. Within days, riots were spreading across the North Bank as the city erupted in flames.
Course of the Riots
By early June, the unrest in Chardon became a major crisis. With much of the Chardonian Legion away from the capital in Dunmar to prosecute the Chardon-Dunmar War, and the Magistros with the fleet in Darba negotiating Karnas’s surrender, chaos reigned in Chardon.
The Eightfold Flame briefly controlled large sections of the North Bank. Fires burned across the refineries of the Ragwater Basin, and street fighting and vigilante justice spread through the chalyte districts. Martial law was declared soon after; legions blockaded the River Bridge, cutting off movement between the North Bank and the rest of Chardon.
The riot’s decisive turn came in mid-June, when many Eightfold Flame leaders vanished for reasons never publicly explained. Later accounts often connected the timing to Riswynn’s claiming and rededication of the Crown of Purity after the rescue of Cloudspinner, when the Crown’s old bonds of domination were broken. Whatever the cause, the disappearances took the wind out of the protests: by the end of June, the North Bank remained scorched and hungry, but the uprising had lost much of its coordination.
Aftermath
The riots forced the chalyte question into the open, and upended the chalyte trade. By late June, incoming shipments had halted because merchants would not send raw ore into a city in chaos, and existing reserves could not sustain the system indefinitely. As Chardon still depended on chalyte for public works, military infrastructure, and urban life, it seemed a crisis was at hand that could leave thousands starving and suffering when chalyte magic failed around the city.
The settlement came through the actions of the Dunmar Fellowship to secure a new chalyte source in the Chataan mountains. With an independent chalyte supply guaranteed, the Magistros moved against the old families, leading to the creation of the Chalyte Refining Corporation and the enactment of many trade reforms.
