Magistros Mitus Verina Auratan

🔈 (MEE-toos veh-REE-nah aw-rah-TAHN)

Mitus Verina Auratan is the Magistros of Chardon and ruler of the Chardonian Empire, having succeeded his aunt Seva Auratan in DR 1746.

He is a youthful, popular leader, energetic and handsome, though brash and somewhat arrogant as well. Mitus enjoys his fame, and sincerely believes in the necessity of the empire, though he is willing to admit to its imperfections. He greatly admires the Drankorian Empire during its Golden Age, before the Drankorian Civil War and the decline of the empire.

Under his rule, Chardon has seen a significant cultural shift, with Windcallers and other practical wizards rising in prominence, at the expense of the old chalyte merchant class, the Hetaeri Magica, and the academics at the Faculty of Magic who, while they may have spoken out against corruption of the Chalyte Oligarchs of Chardon, where more than happy to benefit from their money.

Background

Mitus was born to the Chardonian branch of the wealthy Auratan Family. His mother, Domitia Auratan, died shortly after his birth; his father, in his grief, subsequently entered a religious order. He was largely raised by his childhood bodyguard and military tutor, Octavia Antussus, as well as his aunt, the Magistros Seva Auratan.

From a young age he took to the ocean, and learned to sail and command with the Chardonian navy, especially under the tutelage of Tiberius, a prominent Windcaller, though Mitus has no magical aptitude of his own. He quickly rose to prominence, and became the youngest admiral of the southern fleet, winning fame through campaigns against Illorian piracy that culminated in the conquest of Illoria. His naval career secured strong support among sailors and the Windcallers, and helped establish his popular reputation as a defender of Chardon. When he became Magistros in DR 1746, he drew heavily on the Windcaller ranks for his personal guard.

Recent Events

During the Chardon-Dunmar War in DR 1749, Mitus sailed with the fleet that defeated Darba and helped negotiate the subsequent peace settlement.

When the Dunmar Fellowship secured a new chalyte supply in the Chataan Mountains, he broke the oligarchic families’ monopoly through the Chardonian Chalyte Trade Reforms, transferring control to imperial institutions, the Windcallers, and organized chalyte workers. In negotiations with Kenzo, he agreed to worker representation in the Chalyte Refining Corporation and granted Kenzo control over confiscated properties in the Ragwater Basin and Riverside Quarter to dispose of as he pleased.
