Francisca, mother of Xavier and Adina, is a poor seamstress who does piece-work sewing and mending out of the small apartment she shares with her children near the Foundry Market. In good times, she has a small stall on the edge of the Foundry Market; in bad times, she hides in her apartment and yells at her children. She is middle aged, but looks older.
Her chief hope is that her children will have a better life than she has had.
