Narrative

In Lord Endless Ending’s manor, the grandfather clock strikes zero and the party regroups – Tarek after a sideways architectural mishap and some theft, Kaito after leaving to find a better party vibe, and Txarro from looking through the eyes of the owl familiar he sent off to follow a human woman down the road toward the neighbors.

The party reconstructs the working theory for Kaito. When the clock strikes zero, Lord Endless Ending must send a mortal guest toward the neighbor’s house; the headless bodies on the road may be people who were sent that way and did not survive what came next.

The party crosses the ballroom to Lord Endless Ending, an elegant fey lord attended by an anxious badger butler. Kaito reads the butler’s surface thoughts and finds a servant almost overwhelmed by work needed to clean up the household disorder: broken glass, wine stains, interrupted duties, and the frustration of waiting beside his Lord when there is cleaning to do.

The badger presents the group and asks what gifts they have brought. Txarro offers the haunting sound of a loon from the mortal world, Edric gives a vial of holy water blessed by the Night Queen, Kaito turns his entrance into a showy musical performance, Tarek makes a mouse skull vanish as a fragment of death, and Ayveen presents her decorated moonrise composition. Lord Endless Ending answers the each gift with couplets of poetry and welcomes the mortals into his home.

Txarro tells Lord Endless Ending that the party came through a door that closed behind them and does not know how to leave. The Lord says there is a way home through his nearest neighbor’s house to the north – the same direction as the woman who just left. He explains that a mortal wizard tricked him into an agreement he did not intend: he must send mortal guests through that house whenever the magical clock brought by the wizard and her entourage (of whom one still remains) strikes zero. Through various portents, he has learned that the bargain can be undone if a glass key from the lock of the cold-iron door to the 27th Room is brought back to him and broken. Kaito warns him about the bodies on the road, but he answers that his responsibility ends at the gate.

The party argue through the risks: whether retrieving the glass key would help Hulda, whether the neighbor’s house is still their best way home, whether the wizard can be trusted, and whether agreeing to anything with a Fey Lord is itself the trap.

Kaito then carefully phrases the party’s departure so that they are headed toward the neighbor’s house without promising to retrieve the key. Lord Endless Ending says that if the doorway toward the 27th room is truly their destination, his gates are open, and he does not wish to compel them as he was compelled: the gates will open only if, in the future, they have already gone through the other door. The distinction makes the whole exit feel less like a plan and more like a story already bending around them.

Before leaving, they return to the clock. Inspecting the grandfather clock which resembles the one they saw in Dandelion House, they find a dial with Dwarven Reckoning dates on its face which span from the first year of Drankor to their present day (1740), and four dials which (they later learn) show four six-digit prime numbers. The numbers on the face and four dials all change at once, with no discernable order.

In the library, the party finds the sleeping scholar later known as Menestheus. Kaito reads dreams made of numbers, beauty, deadlines, unfamiliar language, and annoyance at his boss, while Tarek lifts two books from the scholar’s satchel. With Ayveen’s Comprehend Languages, the group reads “The Shape of Possibility” and “Brilliant Numbers”, finding theories about possible futures, story-like time, and number systems that may encode locations or possibilities.

Still looking for any other way out, Txarro dives into the river beside the manor and swims only to find himself reappearing near where he began.

When the clock strikes zero again, the party waits near the gate and discovers that Menestheus is the next mortal sent. He hails them in a language only Ayveen can understand through magic and when she answers in Old Tollish, he recognizes Northros, touches a translation ring, and begins speaking with them directly.

He says he is from Drankor, came from the 27th House with two or three dozen members of his order, the Arithrimos Lamperum, but having a drank at the party, fell asleep, and woke just now to find everyone gone.

The party’s questions force Menestheus to confront that he is centuries out of time. Drankor has fallen, its language is no longer spoken, and Thalestria’s warnings about the empire’s end may have been right. He explains that for centuries the Arithrimos Lamperum his society closed or repaired the holes between worlds – between the world, the Feywild, dream, and other realms – that could not safely stay open. In the waning days of empire, having has presentiment of what was to come, the wizard Thalestria, his master and the head of the order, redirected them toward permanently sealing those breaches which were still open.

Menestheus explains he is a mathematician and geographer. His work is as a kind of map-reader: four six-digit brilliant numbers together serve as encoded location keys: with the right factors memorized, they can hide maps of weak points between planes in plain sight. Tarek secretly slips the lifted book back into his satchel while Menestheus talks.

With Menestheus, the party presses onward to the 27th House whose entry is a simple door in doorframe at the end of a narrow promontory above cliffs that fall into utter darkness below them. As they stand before it, Lord Endless Ending speaks from the manor, a sonnet which either entreats the party to a future path or describes a past path already taken by the party to bring back the key and set him free.

Shadow walks beside you in the gloaming,
whisp’ring a name that you forgot to fear.
Bring its key, I’ll break my oath avowing
you’ll watch this heavy contract disappear.

Where floorboards cry beneath a hidden weight,
of ancient seed o’ergrown, long-pruned, unmissed:
spin the rusted wheels of that weary place,
And keep us all far from its bright abyss.

Unveil the phantom shape I cannot trace,
the quiet path a turning labyrinth weaves.
Unlock the stranger prisoned in that place,
and strip the shroud your waking minds believe.

So take the secret path I cannot see,
bring back the key to finally set me free.
