Haldrenn

🔈 (HAL-dren)

Haldrenn is a small, isolated hill village in the Highmoor, northeast of Brantor and Roscombe, sheltered by a windswept ridge marked with carved wooden wards. The village clings to the eastern side of the ridge, northwest of the Umber lowlands, a small collection of turf-roofed houses and stone walls gathered around a spring-fed well. Each spring, herders drive shaggy highland cattle up to summer shielings, while farmers tend rye and kale on the slope below the village.

Layout

The main village consists of 11 houses and a small temple to The Mother around the communal well. To the south, strips of arable land are farmed in rotation, providing rye, barley, and kale for the village; two rowan-fringed orchards are nestled in sheltered hollows. North are the summer pastures. The western hollow, toward Brantor, has a coppiced wood for charcoal.

Customs and Lore

The people of Haldrenn traditionally place carved wooden wards along the ridgelines, especially to the east, to deter hostile fey. Village stories warn of Hollow Men and the Briarheart and speak of the rituals needed to avert danger. Local tradition treats these customs as part warning and part bargain: a way to keep older fey passages closed against worse powers from beyond the moor.

Helen of Haldrenn, the administrator of the village temple, is a keeper of these fey stories. Alewyn’s hearth serves as an informal winter gathering place, where local gossip and travelers’ tales circulate during the cold months.
