Torvaine Watch

Torvaine Watch is a small keep and toll-gate in the Torvaine Forest, guarding the road from Valcroix to Roscombe. The road climbs out of the Umber valley, passes through the forested hills, and runs through the watch before continuing toward the highland valley around Roscombe. The watch traditionally keeps this stretch of road clear, collects tolls, and serves as the main garrisoned checkpoint between Valcroix and Roscombe.

The fort includes a gate and portcullis, western and eastern towers, barracks, a mess hall, an armory, a smithy, a chapel, and officers’ quarters.

Fall of the Watch

In early DR 1715, a cursed Serpentine Dagger recovered from an Avatus-era tomb was brought into Torvaine Watch. The dagger passed from the soldier who found it to temple steward Wulfram, then to the smith Bartoz, before its influence reached Sir Einrik Arpaad, commander of the watch. Arpaad murdered the garrison in a paranoid rage; the violence left the fort overrun by undead, with Arpaad bound to the watch as a ghost.

The Addermarch Mercenaries found the watch silent and sealed on April 28, 1715 while escorting Oona Stonebridge toward Roscombe. They destroyed the undead in the lower rooms and smithy, recovered Brask’s body, confronted Arpaad’s ghost, and escaped with the Serpentine Dagger. Owen Tavish later helped cleanse the haunting.

After the haunting was cleansed, Lady Elowen Duval ordered the watch secured and repaired, but lingering rumors about the ghost of Einrik Arpaad and the haunting of the Watch continue to this day.
