The Great Library
- A library in Precinct IV, Chardon, the Chardonian Empire, Greater Chardon
The Great Library is an ancient scholarly institution and library complex, located in the academic quarter of Chardon. It has been synonymous with magical scholarship for centuries, and is the oldest academic institution in Chardon. Few who visit the city fail to be impressed by the massive, 600-foot-tall twisting spire of the grandest building in the library complex rising over the city, or the extravagant rumors of the secrets hidden in its locked archives. The stated purpose of the Great Library is to collect and preserve knowledge of magic for the benefit of all.
-
What the Great Library is now
- Establish it as both a monumental complex and an independent scholarly institution in Chardon’s academic quarter.
- Describe its purpose: collecting, preserving, studying, and sometimes recovering books, records, magical knowledge, and artifacts.
- Mention its massive spire and its importance to Chardon’s identity as a center of learning and magic.
-
Origins and historical importance
- Begin with the Sibyline Archives, founded by the Sibylinites in DR 688.
- Explain its transformation after the Fall of Drankor, when rescued books and knowledge greatly expanded the collection.
- Connect the Library’s growth to Chardon’s own development: it attracted scholars and wizards and helped shape the surrounding academic district.
-
Place within Chardon’s academic world
- Clarify that it is closely affiliated with—but institutionally independent from—the University of Chardon.
- Cover its participation in the Hetaeri Magica and its resulting influence over the preservation and regulation of magical knowledge.
- Explain its relationship with the Society of the Open Scroll: the Library funds much of the Society’s exploratory work, but the two are not the same organization and may differ in temperament and standards.
-
Archivists and expeditions
- Describe the Library as an active institution whose archivists identify lost works, evaluate discoveries, and commission expeditions.
- Use Lyra’s DR 1747 hiring of the future Silver Tempests to recover the Elemental Scrolls of Airion as the principal example.
- Keep subsequent adventures to a sentence or dated section unless they materially changed the Library itself.
The oldest building and organization in Chardon, dedicated to collecting and preserving knowledge, often in the form of books and scholarly works, though the Great Library also funds adventuring expeditions to recover more esoteric treasure.
History
- 688 DR: (Great Library): A small library is constructed in Chardon, known as the Sibyline Archives, associated with the Sibylinites, a secret order in Drankor devoted to secret knowledge of The Sibyl.
- 1063 DR: (Great Library): The Sibyline Archives are expanded, nearly doubling in size, to accommodate books and knowledge saved from the Fall of Drankor. They become known as the Great Library of Chardon.
