Narrative

Rayna arrives at the Leviathan Inn with a story that begins in childhood, when she first heard the ocean speak through songs and visions. Those songs went silent after a nightmare of tearing and loss, then recently returned with a plea about something trapped under rock but still resting on the waves. The vision showed her Guzo the Mariner, a white-sand shrine, and a fragment of song that must be restored.

The party presses Rayna for practical details and uses Trok’s sketch to test whether anyone in Hamri recognizes the place. Yaz identifies the image as an old Guzo shrine in a North Cliff sea cave, and Ovina remembers the collapsed entrance near the last tower in the line. By the end of the evening, the plan is simple: take Ryu’s boat out on the falling tide and search the old cave-in directly.

Morning brings calm water after the storm, and Rayna comes aboard Ryu’s small fishing boat to guide and help sail. The group reaches the unstable cliff north of the towers, finds the old cave-in where Ovina said it should be, and confirms that something has recently punched through the rock. Ryu links his senses to Turk while Wazir sends a mechanical fish, giving the party a safer way to scout the passage before diving in.

The scouts reveal the same white-sand, blue-lit cave Rayna described, so the party dives through the blasted underwater breach. Watery, frog-like creatures whistle a warning and nearly bring the approach to a fight, but they answer in Primordial and say their boss went into the temple with orders not to leave without the crystal. Trok poses as the new boss, invokes Gazankoa, and threatens them with a shattered door fragment until the leaders stay back and one cowed creature follows the party inside.

Inside the shrine, the cowed creature hangs back until Trok orders it to test the glowing altar, then the party studies the statue of Guzo, old offerings, and a damaged stone chest. The chest still preserves the prayer book, saints’ story book, and ledger of prayers left by earlier visitors. A Mawaran inscription directs them to kneel and pray Guzo’s ancestor prayer; when Nerissa finds and sings it, the hidden slab door vanishes, revealing a large marid trapped by the shrine’s blue light with the song crystal in its grasp.

At the threshold, the party talks long enough to understand the trap. The elemental broke into the shrine, took the crystal, and triggered the altar’s blue light, which blocks its teleportation and pins it in the hidden chamber. It offers to return to the plane of water and let the party present the crystal to Gazankoa, but its threats make clear that it will keep hunting the shard and anyone carrying it. The party chooses to bottle it inside the shrine and fight.

Combat begins as negotiations break down. The trapped marid lashes the shrine with a massive jet that batters the front line, drops Geo, and turns the planned doorway ambush into a hard scramble. The fight begins to turn when the blue light drags against the elemental and amplifies Nerissa’s magic, letting Trok and Wazir punish it as it staggers back. Its servants crowd the stairs with hardened bodies, grapples, scimitars, whips, lightning, and boiling water, while the elemental turns to mist and slips through the wall to escape. It reappears outside the chamber, kills one fleeing servant for cowardice, and strikes Ander and Trok, but Trok redirects a blow and Ryu marks it before a trident hit collapses it into water. The party then kills the last two creatures before they can swim off after Rayna.

With the fight over, the party gathers around the crystal and Nerissa hears a faint melody of peaceful sleep and gratitude. The flooded ruin holds little else beyond the offerings Trok already looted, so they swim back out and hand the fragment to Rayna. Everyone shares a vision of an undersea home being rebuilt among kelp and fishfolk, and Rayna recognizes that the crystal can guide her there. That afternoon they return to the Leviathan Inn, where she settles in for one more night before sailing across the ocean toward Apporia and the merfolk city of Omi.

Combat

  • Battle in Guzo’s Shrine: trapped marid, water elemental servants. The party fights a trapped marid and its water elemental servants in the blue-lit temple, kills them before they can threaten Rayna, and leaves with the recovered crystal.
